This engraving was published in the The Illustrated London News on October 16, 1858, on page 366. On the opposite page (367), it was described in this fashion: "The engraving represents the mode of portaging north canoes across a point of land in the neighbourhood of rapids of falls which oppose [sic] obstacles to continous navigation. The figure in the centre is 'Charlot', the Iroquois guide. In the rear the half-breed 'Wigwam is in the act of adjusting the fire under the kettles for the noonday meal. In front of him are two of the voyageurs with packs of baggage, carrying their load by means of a strap passing around the forehead. The figure on the left is one of the Bowsmen, Charlot's son, portaging the paddles belonging to the canoe.", The extract concluded: "The scene is the Red River, and it represents the last labours of the Iroquois, as far as Mr. Hind's party is concerned.", Also included with this print is a copy of the photograph upon which it was based. The note on the back of the photograph states the following: "The photograph from which this photo-engraving was derived was taken on June 2, 1858 by Humphrey Lloyd Hime (Professor of Chemistry and Geology at Trinity College, Toronto) a member of the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition of 1858."

General note:

Voyageurs were generally contracted employees who worked as canoe paddlers, bundle carriers, and general laborers for fur trading firms. They were also known as engagés, or employees. The voyageurs were French-Canadian, Métis, English, First Nations and German.

Note on the state of conservation:

April 1975 - At the time it was accessioned, the print had a remnant of masking tape on the upper edge of the verso.
