The watercolour depicts a head on view of both the Horseshoe, American Falls and Goat Island with the terrapin tower. On the left is the stairway down to below the American Falls., June 1975 - visual inspection revealed that the work is soiled and has several creases (left edge, u.l., l.l.). There is a tear l.r. edge.

Inscribed. Signed. Dated., Inscription: Inscribed recto: l.l. "G.W." in brushpoint; verso: u.c. "Wolverhampton Ex"; left side centre "Rough Sketch for the picture / painted for Mr. Whitworth / in return from the U. States 1853" by the artist in pencil; l.r. corner "Mr. Whitworth - Sir Joseph Whitworth the famous engineer / who had accompanied Mr. George Wallis on Commission to the U.S.A. 1853 & after whom Sir Whitworth Walls / [illegible] son was names" in another hand in pencil.
