Gabriel Dumont was a Métis hunter, merchant, ferryman, and political and military leader. He was born in December 1837 in the Red River Settlement (Man.), the second son of Isidore Dumont and Louise Laframboise. Dumont married Madeleine Wilkie in 1858 at St Joseph (Walhalla, N.Dak.).
