This photograph is taken from a painting of the sitter, painted during Tayler's lifetime (according to an inscription in typeset, which was attached to the backing paper of the framed photograph, see portrait file 207-678). The National Archives does not hold the original painting; the location of the original is not known. The photograph was presented to the National Archives by the great-grandson of the sitter, Robert H. Hazelton of Toronto, in 1936., Original location of the photograph according to art log for 1936 was: the Poster Room [Tray 104 ?]. Present location of the photograph is unknown; it is not on the portrait file. Complete transcription of backing paper inscription is on the portrait file., Josias Tayler was born on the Isle of Jersey in 1782 and died at Perth, Ontario on January 10, 1845. His wife Maria Britto of Portugal died in Perth in 1859. Tayler was an officer in the 3rd East Kent Regiment (the Buffs) of the British Army, and fought under the Duke of Wellington in Spain and Portugal. Colonel Tayler was a merchant and also Perth's first Postmaster (unitl 1829), Justice of the Peace, Town Clerk, and Trustee of the District School. He also was a Member of Parliament for the County of Lanark under Governor Sir Francis Bond Head. (This information from typeset inscription).
