This work is derived from an almost identical work by R.P. Meade, photograph by J. Stephens Photo Studio, Barrie, Ontario, at the National Archives (Andrew J. Merrilees collection), accession number: 1987-24-194., Meade was involved in the Red River Resistance as a member of the Canadian Party. His name appears on a list of men arrested by Riel's forces in December 1869 and imprisoned at Fort Garry. He was also editor of the Nor'Wester in 1869. (See artist file: 705-3235).

General note:

The 1869-70 uprising in the Red River Colony (Red River Rebellion or Red River Resistance) was incited by the transfer of the territory of Rupert's Land to Canada. The colony's Métis feared for their culture and land rights under Canadian control. The Métis organised a rebellion (resistance) and declared a provisional government to negotiate terms for entering Confederation.
