The image is from a grangerized copy of Bigsby's 1850 publication The Shoe and Canoe to which Bigsby added or iserted additional drawings, prints and maps, as well as annotations on many pages., There are notes descriptive of Bigsby's visit to Niagara Falls in the text on p. 9, which describes an incident in the visit: "My companion on one of my many visits to the Falls, Captain Vivian, made eight beautiful sketches of them. He had just finished them carefully and left the room for a mere moment - and they were gone. All inquiries were in vain. They were lost, and for ever." Bigsby suspected a young American woman, also a guest at the hotel, who had expressed an interest in Vivian's drawings, but could prove nothing.
