Profile of Canadian artist Frederick Horsman Varley, member of the Group of Seven, to mark his death at age 88. His life and career are examined through archival clips and interviews. Includes footage of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, stills and film of Varley in the late 1930s. The film focuses on Varley as a man and a painter. Beginning with shots of Varley's funeral service and eulogy given by scholar, poet and painter Barker Fairley, the film moves back and forth between interviews and images of Varley's work. Mavor Moore interviews Group of Seven artist and friend A.J. Casson, who speaks of Varley's individualistic style and the aims he shared with the group. Varley's portraits, as seen on display at the Varley Room of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, are highlighted throughout. A portion of an on-camera interview with Varley is mixed with shots of him in his Toronto studio as he prepares for work (these shots taken from the NFB VARLEY, by Allan Wargon). Also interviewed is Barker Fairley who speaks of Varley's lack of interest in politics, his war paintings and his interest in the human landscape as opposed to the physical landscape of Canada. The documentary concludes with a shot of Varley's empty studio. <29mn 38s>
