Historical recreation of the Battle of St. Denis in 1837 shows British troops advancing with church and other buildings in the background. Several wounded or dead patriotes lie on the ground.

This item is a black & white reproduction of an image by C. W. Jefferys that appeared as the frontispiece in "The Patriotes of '37" by Alfred D. Decelles (translation by William Stewart Wallace). This book was published in 1916 as Volume 25 in the "Chronicles of Canada" series (Toronto, Glasgow: Brook & Company).
For a colour scan of this image, see AMICUS 11453212 (e010788087-v8). This version is from a 1922 edition of "The Patriotes of '37."

Custodial history:

Alexander Edward Macdonald donated his copy of "The patriotes of '37" to the Archives in 1978 and it was part of the National Archives Library. In 1995 the volume was transferred to the National Library collection (AMICUS 3373878).
