By Lieut. C. Sedley. Charles Herbert Sedley was born on 10 September 1827 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. He was the only surving son of John Somner Sedley (an officer with the Royal Staff Corps and later the Barrack Master in Mauritius) and Harriet Elizabeth Hancorn. In 1844 at the age of 17, Charles Sedley joined the British Army as a cadet in the Royal Engineers, and he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 17 December 1846. Less than a year later, on 18 April 1847 he became a 1st Lieutenant. From May of 1849 to February of 1853, Lieutenant Sedley was stationed with the Royal Engineers in Canada. Sedley also served in the Crimea (where he was seriously woundedin September of 1855 during the assualt on the Redan), in Gibraltar, and finally in Jamaica. He died in Kingston, Jamaica, on December 19, 1866.
