On July 6, 1885, Louis Riel, the Métis leader was charged with high treason. The trial opened on July 20, with Riel pleading not guilty. This trial was to have disastrous consequences for Riel and for Canada.
The North-West Rebellion (or North-West Resistance) was a five-month insurgency against the Canadian government, fought mainly by the Métis and their First Nations allies.
