This group portrait is an imaginery gathering of the navy men and explorers who advised the British Admiralty on the search for Sir John Franklin. These men never met in the circumstances depicted, nor was there an offical body called the Arctic Council. The painting was commissioned by Colonel John Barrow, a secretary at the Admiralty directly concerned with the search for Franklin. It was meant to commemorate the various searches for Franklin., For a fuller discussion of the painting and engraving bass based on it see Richard Ormand's "Early Victorian Portraits," (London: National Portrait Gallery, 1975), pp. 548-550., The painting by Stephen Pierce after which this print is made was completed in 1851 and is now in the National Portrait Gallery (London).
