Documentary film. In this centennial special, film clips and photographs illustrate the history of the Canadian National Exhibition, from the 1800s to to the present. The CNE abided through times of war and depression, always exhibiting the best in amusement, spectacles and national progress. In the chronolgical order of its development, sequences are shown on: the early midway attractions with the coming of the Conklin Show; the Royal pageants with Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and Lord Mountbatten; the military, agricultural and industrial displays; the big band era with Guy Lombardo; the introduction of television in Canada, with Prime Minister Mackenzie King at the exhibition's opening ceremony; leading figures like John Diefenbacker, L.B. Pearson, Mayor Phil Gibbons of Toronto, Marilyn Bell, and Evel Knievel; the grandstand shows with Bob Hope, the Bay City Rollers and the Scottish Tattoo. Then came the Trudeau years and a new flag was introduced to Canada - sequence on Prime Minister Trudeau at an aquarama show, and events on skydiving, the Red Army Dancers, waterfront activities, lumberjack show, and many more. <30mn>
