A view of the village of Upper Woodstock, New Brunswick, where the artist Edwin Tappan Adney lived continuously from 1933 until his death in 1950. (The artist's wife, Minnie Bell Sharp [1865-1937], had come from Upper Woodstock and he had first lived there, on an intermittent basis, beginning in 1887.) "Hard Scrabble" was a vernacular term given by Loyalist settlers to the area/location. Its precise meaning has become obscured over time. The term might possibly have meant that the land in the area was not considered to have been particularly arable by these early settlers
