This engraving is based on a portrait painting of Laval thought to be the work of Frère Luc (1615-1685) who visited Quebec in 1670-1671. A 19th-century copy of the original portrait painting is in the Grand Séminaire de Québec. The print is cropped inside the platemark., The print bears a coat of arms., See Facing History (National Archives of Canada, 1993), p. 5, cat. no. 5, for information concerning the sitter and the print.
