The Journal of Cook's Voyages was published in 1777, in two volumes and includes engravings done by many artists after drawings executed by William Hodges who was chosen, by the British Admiralty, to accompany Captain James Cook on his Second Voyage (1772-1775) as the official artist of this expedition. The official first edition was published February 1, 1777 by William Strahan in New Street, Shoe Lane and Thomas Cadell in the Strand, London England. This image appears in Volume Two, facing page 97., The feathers of a fine mazarine blue, except those of its neck, which are of a most beautiful siver-grey, and two or three short whiteones, which are on the pinion joint of the wing. Under its throat hang two little tufts of curled, show-white feathers called its poies, which being the Otaheitean word for ear-rings (sic) occasioned our giving that name to the bird (p.98).
