On the left is a medal with the image of Captain James Cook, facing left. On the right, connected by a small bar, is a medal with the image of a draped woman in a toga, facing left and leaning her elbow on a pillar, with a spear, compass, and shield. The image of Captain Cook is one side of a medal that was struck in 1784 by the Royal Society in honoour of the explorer. The image on the right is the other side and shows an allegory of Great Britain. It is this side that illustrates the title page of the second edition of the second volume of A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean., See acc. no. 1991-265-6X.
