Film documenting construction of Portland to Montreal pipeline. The companies constructing the pipeline, as indicated by voice-over narration and shots of company names on equipment, are: Oklahoma Contracting Co. Pipeline Contractors, Dallas, Texas, and Williams Bros. Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Visuals of: bulldozers clearing route; routers, shovels and trench diggers preparing right-of-way; drilling and explosives to open solid rock cuts; visuals of welding sections of 12-inch stainless steel pipe, each section weighing one ton; pipeline on Mount Sutton, Quebec; ceremony on August 1, 1941 to mark link of American section with Canadian section at Highwater, Quebec, with Premier Godbout of Quebec, C.D. Howe, the Governor of Vermont and the president of Standard Oil in attendance. They make speeches on podium, (no audio). CBC radio microphones shown. Up to two miles of pipeline is laid each day. On the Canadian section two major rivers had to be crossed, the Richelieu and the St. Lawrence. Dredging barges preparing trench in St. Lawrence. Tugboat "Capt. T.W. Morrison" shown. Map shows location of eight pumping stations along 236-mile pipeline, including South Portland, North Waterford in Maine and Highwater, Quebec. On November 1, 1941, one month ahead of schedule, first tanker, loaded with South American crude oil was unloaded at South Portland. The harbour had to be dredged to accommodate these large tankers. 200,000 gallons per hour were unloaded. On November 10, 1941, the first oil began to move along the pipeline and it arrived on November 16, 1941. Shots of pipeline workers in Montreal and refineries in East Montreal. The narration states: "The Portland to Montreal pipeline gives us greater assurance of receiving all the petroleum products our modern civilization and the emergency of the hour demand. Oil for war, oil to speed the victory, the preservation of our freedom and our great democracy." <27mn 30s>

The pipeline was laid under an emergency schedule to aid the delivery of oil to Canada.~4. A second pipeline was completed in 1950 and a third in 1965.~5. This film was acquired by Northeast Historic Film from The Johnson Group Inc. in 1991.
