Pour plus d'information sur Martin, voir le catalogue de l'exposition " Friendly Spies on the Northern Tour..." (Ottawa, Archives nationales du Canada, 1981), Henry Byam Martin a séjourné en Amérique du Nord de septembre 1832 à juin1833. Il a débarqué à New York, a emprunté la rivière Hudson et le canal Érié pour se rendre aux chutes Niagara, puis s'est rendu à Toronto, à Kingston, à Montréal, à Ottawa et à Québec. De Québec, il est retourné à New York, puis s'est rendu à Baltimore, à Washington, à Richmond, à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, en Alabama et en Nouvelle Orléans.Il est revenu par la rivière Mississippi en passant par Memphis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh et Philadelphie, puis s'est embarqué à New York pour retourner en Angleterre., Ses aquarelles portent sur plusieurs thèmes importants, notamment les moyens de transport, la traite des esclaves et la Southern Secessionist Convention de 1833. La collection compte aussi un nombre important de représentations de costumes, surtout américains. Elle touche également les us et coutumes de l'Amérique.
