Les allusions aux batteries de Montgomery se rapportent au siège du fort de Saint-Jean par les forces américaines en 1775 (George F.G. Stanley. Canada Invaded: 1775-1776, Toronto, 1973). Le Royal George et l'Inflexible jouèrent un rôle important dans l'expédition de Burgoyne en 1777 (Thomas Anbury. With Burgoyne from Quebec. Édité par Sydney Jackman, Toronto, 1963, pp. 134-135).

Hunter travaillait peut-être comme ingénieur à Saint-Jean en 1779 [Haldimand, Montréal, 29 août 1778. Lettre au Capitaine Marr (A.P.C. Papiers Haldimand MG 21 G 2, vol. 62, p.126. Transcription)]. Bien que Hunter ait probablement capté cette vue en 1779, cette version particulière a vraisemblablement été exécutée après qu'il eut obtenu son brevet d'officier en 1781. James Peachey a copié cette vue (Microfiche 2, no de cat. 15).
