À la mort de son oncle, en 1797, il est devenu le deuxième baron d'Amherst. En 1800, il a épousé Sarah Hickman. Il a été gouverneur général de l'Inde et sa nomination au poste de gouverneur général du Canada en 1835 a été annulée par suite d'un changement de gouvernement.
