Description:

Television production of Oscar Wilde's comedy about the aspirations of Jack Worthing to marry Gwendolyn Fairfax, daughter of Lady Bracknell. Lady Bracknell raises objections when she discovers that Jack, as a baby, had been found in a handbag in Victoria Station, left there by an absent-minded governess, and has no information as to who is parents are. To add to the plot, Jack and his cousin Algernon both assume the name of a fictitious character called Ernest, but clear up their identities and appease Lady Bracknell, in time to both be married. The play is adapted for television by John Bethune. Edward Mulhare plays Jack. Patrick MacNee plays Algernon. Dame Edith Evans is Lady Bracknell. Barbara Lord plays Cicily.
