Description:

First North American television performance of the musical drama THE CONSUL, by Italian-American composer Gian-Carlo Menotti. The action takes place in an unnamed European country which has lost its freedom and it centers around the family of John Sorel, a man fighting help the country regain its freedom. He leaves the country to get away from the secret police, leaving his wife, mother and infant son behind. Before leaving, he instructs his wife to go the consulate of one of the democracies to get the necessary visa to leave the country.

1. The subject description and credits are taken from CBC Times,Eastern Region Schedule, January 17-23, 1954, p. 3.~2. Sydney Newman also directed the special film sequences for the TV presentation of the opera.~3. Broadcast direct from Toronto to the full CBC network starting at 10 p.m.~4. The Kinescope Inventory Record attributed this to the series SCOPE but this must be an error since the series did not start until 1954-12-19.
