Head and shoulders portrait of Miss Lowther, showing her right profile. Probably Katherine Lowther, daughter of Robert Lowther, who might have been engaged to Gen. James Wolfe before his death in 1759. None of their correspondence survives, but Lowther was mentioned in Wolfe's will. She later became Duchess Bolton., This work has been identified as the "Miniature of Miss Lowther" in an inventory of Col. Macpherson's house. It was once framed. It is related in size and technique to a miniature of Wolfe (1990-133-1X) that was placed in exactly the same type of frame. The Wolfe miniature was executed by Miss H.S. Turner and dates to May 1837., It was catalogued June 19, 1931, which places some doubt on the attribution of this particular miniature of Miss Lowther to the Macpherson Collection.
