The sitter was the daughter of William Amherst (1809-1844) and Mary Caroline Jenkins (see acc. no. 1979-14-24 for silhouette of her). She was born in 1840 and married Major Robert Bethune in 1865 in England. The ceremony was performed by her uncle Rev. Henry Hotham (see acc. no. 1979-14-21 for a silhouette of his wife Mary Hale). This silhouette is one of eight probably cut by a Hale family member. See acc. nos. 1979-14-18 to 22, 24 and 25 for the other silhouettes, February 1979 - the silhouette is badly damaged on lower edge.
