View of Coburg, Canada West, from the steamer "Sovereign" which is coming in to dock. Two groups of figures stand in front of the artist on the steamer, whose bow is visible. Seven figures stand on the wharf, which also has goods piled up on it. The top half of Victoria College can be seen behind the buildings on the waterfront., George Seton was a British military officer active in North America from April 14, 1844 to August 31, 1848. British officers were often trained in watercolour to record topography. It is apparent from inscriptions on other works that Seton often made sketches which he later worked up into watercolours. He probably did the same with this work., Seton may have had some method for recording or grouping his watercolours. Works 1953-75-2, -13, -114, and 1970-188-2097 are all numbered by the artist.
