View of the Rotunda surrounded by trees and separated from the foreground by a fence. When Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1797-1820), came to Halifax in 1794 Sir John Wentworth gave the Duke his estate in Bedford Basin. The Duke built a lodge and several outbuildings, including the Rotunda (also called the Music Room or Bandshell)., After the Duke left the land changed ownership several times. The lodge decayed, but the rotunda was kept in good condition, and still survives., Attributed to Lady Falkland, wife of Lucius Bentinck Cary who was governor of Nova Scotia from 1840-46. The inscription is on a small piece of paper which is pasted on to the secondary support, l.c. under the image and partially covered by it. There does not appear to be an inscription underneath this cartelino., The folio page has been cut on the right side, suggesting that the work was pasted on the verso. There are no glue marks on the folio recto.
