Ferguson's Cove is on the outer edge of Halifax Harbour, opposite McNab's Island. The church is the centre of the scene. Small houses are scattered in the area around it. A road comes through the hills down to the waterfront, where there are six small wharfs. Several wharfs have sheds on the land beside them. Fishing seems to be the main occupation of the village; there are nets drying on the land in front of the church and on several of the wharfs. Two red dorys float up against the shore., This work is similar to 1990-207-87, a sketch of Three Mile Church. The two works have the same type of support and the watercolour technique is similar. It is unlikely that Lady Falkland is the artist; the script on the reverse is not hers and the watercolour technique seems different., It could have been executed by one of the Haliburton sisters who were travelling with Lady Falkland (they were all amateur artists) or by another amateur artist. Lady Falkland was in Halifax with her husband, who was governor of Nova Scotia from 1840-46.

Removed from: album: watercolour mounted with glue on an unidentified folio, now loose. The folio has been cut from the album.

Dates of creation note:

Research by Alan Ruffman of Dalhousie University has determined that this watercolour probably dates of the second half of 1846, as the the Anglican church depicted was consecrated in July of 1846.
