View of the landscape around Windsor, Nova Scotia from a hill. Attributed to Lady Falkland, whose husband was governor of Nova Scotia from 1840-46. Windsor was where T. C. Haliburton had his home, "Clifton." Many wealthy businessmen had estates there in the 19th century, as they could commute to Halifax 66km away., The women in the inscription are daughters of T. C. Haliburton: Susan (later married J. W. Weldon), Augusta Louisa (later married A. F. Haliburton, artists file #705-2644), and Laura Charlotte (later married W. Cunard). All three were amateur artists. Haliburton cultivated Lord Falkland's friendship in order to secure his posting to the Supreme Court., The Falklands and Haliburtons are recorded travelling together about the province in the Novascotian (Sept. 1, 1845) and the New York Albion (Sept. 14, 1844). It is not known whether they were involved in amateur art activities together in Halifax., The secondary support of this work is similar to 1990-207-81X, -90X, -99X, and -102X. All support Nova Scotian scenes attributed to Lady Falkland, and have a jagged left edge where they were cut out. They may have belonged to an album that Falkland kept during her stay in Nova Scotia.
