The beginnings of a view across an uninhabited valley in Nova Scotia. It has been attributed to Lady Falkland, who is considered the artist of the recto sketch. She was in Nova Scotia while her husband was its governor (from 1840-46). The recto sketch has been brought to greater degree of finish and is oriented differently than the verso sketch., This sketch shows Falkland's working method. First she outlined the composition faintly with pencil. Then she began the washes, starting with the lightest coloured first. She left empty spaces for trees and other elements which would be filled in later.
