Two black women and a child on Broadway in New York. Emphasis appears to be on their colourful clothing, parasol, and elaborate hats. Although this watercolour is dated August 1838, Mrs. Ellice's diary entry for September 2, 1838 seems to describe the scene depicted: "Coming home we met a Nigger Congregation...I could not help thinking that they had masks on & then their very gay and fantastic mode of admiring themselves show off their lovely visages to the best advantage., Light blue bonnets & white flowers: bright yellow gowns; or any other delicate colour; & always parasols to preserve their complexions. I suppose they would bleach in the Sun." (Canada: Oberon, 1975. p. 84)., Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page, folio 21, was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original mount attached separately.
