Faded, soiled., Although originally thought to be a portrait of John Galt Sr., because of a note on a memo accompanying the drawing from the Manuscript Division, portrait has been identified as likely that of John Galt Jr. (son of the elder), who would have been about 10 years old at the time the portrait was taken (1828). Please see art accession file for further information about identification., Artist is possibly by J. Meadows (active 1812-1845) London, miniaturist, who exhibited at the Royal Academy during this time. It has been suggested that the artist may have been James Meadows. There was also a James Edwin Meadows active in the mid 19th century, in England as well, but both exhibited landscapes or seascapes and the attribution seems unlikely.
