She found that the arts and the revolution are closely allied there; but, unlike many other Communist regimes, the Cuban government has not imposed ideological chains on the performers and creators. Abstract art and experimental electronic music flourish alongside traditional arts in a revolution that did not end when guns were put down, says Miss Morgan. Interviews include those with Alicia Alonso, distinguished ballerina, who heads the National Ballet of Cuba; painters Raoul Martinez; ex-American writer Edmundo Desnos; who wrote "Memories of Underdevelopment"; composers Leo Brouwer and Juan Branco; and Ramiro Guerra, artistic director of the Modern Ballet of Cuba.
