Oronhyatekha (Burning Cloud), a Mohawk also known as Peter Martin, was born on August 10, 1841 on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. He was chosen by his community to give an address to the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, during his visit to Canada in 1860. The Prince and his party were impressed by Oronhyatekha and arranged for him to study in England at the University of Oxford under the tutelage of the Prince's physician, Sir Henry Wentworth Acland. Oronhyatekha returned to Canada in 1863 and went on to study medicine at the University of Toronto. He became a well-known doctor and public figure, a leader in fraternal organizations and active in politics. He practised medicine at Frankfort, Stratford, Napanee and London. He became Supreme Chief Ranger of the Independent Order of Foresters, 1881-1907. He was the author of History of the Independent Order of Foresters, 1894.
