This CBC series presents the NFB film THE HECKLERS, documentary tracing two centuries of political cartooning in Canada. Commentary, satirical songs, interviews and cartoons (many of which are animated, with dramatised captions) provide a lively and informative review of Canadian political history through the eyes of its pictorial "hecklers". Among those interviewed are: John G. Diefenbaker, Robert Stanfield, Joey Smallwood, Pierre Berton, John Bassett, Bruce Hutchison, and cartoonists Terry Mosher (The Gazette), Duncan Macpherson (The Toronto Star), Bob Bierman (The Victoria Times), Jean-Pierre Girerd (La Presse, Montreal), and Len Norris. As representatives of the "Establishment" lampoons of the Armed Forces, the R.C.M.P. and the following public figures: General Woolf, Sir John A. MacDonald, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, R.B. Bennett, W.L. King, William Aberhart, Maurice Duplessis, Joey Smallwood, Queen Elizabeth, Lester B. Pearson, J.G. Diefenbaker, Pierre Trudeau, Robert Stanfield, and René Lévesque. Topics dealt with in editorial cartoons and satirical publications of various kinds include: the French-English Question in 1866; Confederation; American-Canadian relations; United States in world opinion; Anti-Semitism in Montreal; Separatism; Bilingualism; Newfoundland; Federal-Provincial relations; the FLQ Crisis; the flag debate; and Trudeau mania. <60mn>
