This Star of a Knight Commander, the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, was awarded to the Hon. Hugh John Macdonald. The breast star is silver and enamel with 8 points, and it features a central design of St. Michael encountering Satan with the legend "Auspeicium Meliorius Aevi" ("Token of a better age"). The central design rests on a red St. George's Cross.

General note:

The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George was founded in April of 1818 and is one of the orders of chivalry that constitute the British honours system. Men and women who have been deemed to have rendered significant services in relation to the Commonwealth or foreign nations receive this award which consists of three categories: Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross; Knight Commander or Dame Commander; and Companion. All three levels receive the badge of the order, while only the Knights and Dames Grand Cross and the Knights and Dames Commander receive the star.
