Recording of the brief presented by Mrs. S. Boyd Millen at the public hearings to develop a master plan for the Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kooteney National Parks, held by the National and Historic Parks Branch of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, during April 19-26, 1971. In her brief, Mrs. Millen presents the following recommendations: development of park trails rather than access roads; natural controls for disease rather than chemical spraying; limits on public use according to the classification of different areas; control of airfields near the park borders and flights over park lands; aerial lifts kept to a minimum; preference given to more austere uses in the way of alpine huts and wilderness shelters for cross country skiers; protection of all fragile ground cover against destruction; protection against all commercial interests whose activities could erode natural resources; protection of rivers within park boundaries from diversionary projects initiated outside park lands; production of an illustrated folder for the disposal of waste by users; protection of parks against snow and land recreational vehicles; response to demand by visitors for information on historical and interpretive programs in the parks; and publication of a "primer" for use in schools on the ecology, stewardship and interpretation of national parks.~To conclude, Mrs. Millen stresses the importance of strenuous protection for Canada's national parks in the interest of future generations.
