A bronze medal commemorating the life of Philip II (called Philip Augustus), son of Louis VII and King of France from 1180 until his death in 1223. While all of his predecessors had been known as Kings of the Franks, Philip II styled himself as King of France, the first monarch in French history to carry that title.
