This roll is comprised of segments from several British productions. ~"From the bases they marched in endless columns, with stern-set lips and proudly beating hearts into that maw of death and desolation." "On the way to the trenches." Troops march past along a country road. "Here in the muddy fields of Ypres commenced the state of siege - trench warfare." Shots of trenches. Troops on horseback pulling wagons of supplies and artillery cannons. Troops on foot. "Where to show a head meant death. An artillery officer directs the fire of his battery." Officer on a communication phone with note-pad. An artillery crew load and fire a cannon. "France. La Basseé. A British regiment advancing to the firing line." Long shot of troops running with rifles drawn. "They fought with an inflexible courage while they faced the first fierce rigours of winter..." A soldier sets up a brazier in a trench. "...and then came days of ceasless rain...The land was changed to a sea of mud, and existence became a horror even to the bravest." Shots of a muddy field. Troops at a bunker. "The noblest manhood of our race responded to the divine impulse which sought in sacrifice to prove that they who lay down their lives for the right do not die, but pass to immortality." Pan shot of a trench and crucifix. Troops working in a muddy trench with a pick-axe. A sentry approaches the camera.
