Lapel button used during Sir Charles Tupper's campaign(?) for Prime Minister of Canada in 1896. It alludes to his favoured system of preferential trading among nations in which tariffs on foreign goods and on Canadian goods would be reduced reciprocally instead of unilaterally.

The obverse side of the lapel button displays two men in profile. In the background is Hugh John Macdonald, only surviving son of Sir John A. Macdonald (first Prime Minister of Canada) and a politican in his own right serving as both a member of the House of Commons and a federal cabinet minister under Prime Minister Charles Tupper. Tupper is pictured in the foreground of this button.

The reverse side of the button contains the brooch fastener as well as a stamp noting where the button was made (see signatures and inscriptions).
