Subject depicts a landscape over looking a cove; numerous sail ships in water; some architectural structures along shore line; mountains in background, foliage and wooden fence prominent in foreground, Notes: Mrs. Percival who received this sketch was evidently related to the former owners of Spencer Wood. In 1811 the mansion, then know as 'Powell Place' was acquired by Micheal Henry Percival, who re-named it 'Spencer Wood' in honor of his uncle Spencer Percival, Lord Spencer, Prime Minister of Great Britian, 1809-1812. The house was sold again in 1835 when Princess Elizabeth sketched it, it was not long out of Percival ownership., The ROM has 5 pencil sketches of Spencer Wood and area, drawn by Jane and Maria Wilson, 1822; acquired from JLR in 1980., Related to the above mentioned sketches are three watercolour sketches sold at Sotheby's Belgravia, 14 May 1974, lot 25-27, described by Elizabeth Hesse-Homburgh, 'executed in 1839'. Two of these subjects are the same composition as the Wilson pencil sketches, Elizabeth never visited Canada, so much of her information was from her brother the Duke of Kent (Edward Augustus Hanover) who visited Canada in 1794. At this time, Spencer Wood belonged to the English officer, Henry Watson Powell, and was called 'Powell Place.' As well, by the time this painting is said to have been executed, the estate had changed considerably. Where then did Elizabeth get her information concerning the lanscape etc.?

Inscription: in ink, verso, u.c.: No 4; in ink on blue paper glued to wood frame-backing: Given to Mrs. Percival of Frankforth June 29th 1839 by HRH Princess Elizabeth of Hesse-Homburg, daugther of King George III and painted by her the year before her death. They were removed from Stornoway House, St. James in 189[0.6 or 8] at the death of Lady Matheson of the Lewes 4th daughter of the riceipient[sic]- (please note that this inscription is no longer intacted nor does it accompany the watercolour)
