Subject depicts the entrance to St. John's as seen from Fort Townsend. In the foreground a military officer stands on wooden planks and looks through a telescope. He is standing near a large cannon and what resembles a part of a cannon. To his left, goats are grazing in the field enclosed by two large hills. Both hills have some architectural structures at their bases. On the top of the hill on the left are several architectural structures., Item is glued to a secondary support.
