Item depicts a map copied by George Back from an outline drawn on the floor at Fort Chipewyan. The map depicts the route to be followed by the expedition from Fort Chipewyan up the Slave, Yellowknife, and Coppermine Rivers to the Arctic coast. The part of the map to the south and west of the Coppermine was drawn by a Métis man named Beaulieu (written as Boileau), but the charting to the east of the Coppermine was done by a Denesuline (known to Back as Chipewyan) warrior identified as Blackmeat, and depicts a triangular section of the Arctic Coast from the mouth of the Coppermine to the mouth of Burnside River.
