The artist was an American itinerant. She is known to have executed other works in Canada. The Honourable John Fletcher (1787-1844) was born in England. A lawyer, he became a provincial judge of the district of St. Francis. He died in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1844. This is a presumed posthumous portrait of the sitter., Paper adhered to verso of ivory. Ivory has buckled. The ivory has been framed in a hinged case, the front cover however is missing. What remains is the back cover of the case, the metal mat, and glazing.
