This painting is after Richard Short's on-the-spot drawing of the subject., This painting and its companion, "A View of the Treasury and Jesuits College, Quebec City" are believed to have originated from the Townshend family homes in Norfolk, England as evidenced by a label formerly attached to the verso of this work. Although born in France in 1722, Serres was in England by 1758, and pursued an artistic career there, becoming Marine Painter to the King in 1780. He died in 1793. His collaboration with Richard Short on prints after drawings by Short, and paintings by Serres is discussed by Douglas Schoenherr in the Public Archives exhibition catalogue: The Painted Past.
