The sitter, Basilique-Benjamin Trottier Desrivières Beaubien, possibly had his portrait painted by James Peale (1749-1831) Philadelphia when he was studying in the United States. He was active in the militia and became a well respected French Canadian lawyer before he died of cholera in 1831. The artist has been described as one of the finest American miniature painters. This miniature is signed with his characteristic monogram "I P" followed by the date.
