Hall accompanied the Marquis of Lorne (Governor-General of Canada from 1878-1883) on a tour of the North West Territories in 1881. This work is a sketch for a finished oil, originally in the possession of the Duke of Argyll, and now at the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa., The pastel was based upon an on-the-spot pencil sketch the artist did in 1881 which is now also part of the Archives' collection (C-11068).
