Gélinas signale qu'il lui a fallu neuf mois pour écrire ses treize tableaux. Il explique en avoir fait un plan détaillé avant de commencer à écrire le scénario. La description des personnages de la pièce par l'auteur est entrecoupée d'extraits de voix des comédiens. Il dit qu'il a voulu créer une opposition entre les personnages, et explique ensuite comment l'idée de Tit-Coq lui est venue: lorsqu'une compagnie de production lui a demandé en 1947 d'écrire un scénario, le personnage du conscrit dans ses sketchs lui est réapparu.
