Interview of Orville John William Shugg about his career at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He talks about: the Moose River Mine broadcasts by J. Frank Willis and his own work and the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission at the time of the Moose River broadcasts; Ernest Bushnell; his role in the start of the CBC radio farm broadcasts; his hiring as a supervisor of the CBC farm broadcasts; farm broadcast commentator Don Fairbairn; the relationship of the farm broadcasts to farm organizations; pressure by farm organizaitons to have farm broadcasts; the first of the farm family broadcast series, THE CRAIGS, on 1 May 1939; Dean Hughes, the writer of THE CRAIGS; Shugg's leaving the CBC in 1944 to go back to farming and his return to the CBC in 1960; the FARM FORUM programs; Harry Boyle, Shugg's assistant supervisor of farm broadcasts and successor; and people who worked on the farm broadcasts such as Neil Morrison, Fergus Mutrie, Keith Morrow, Ron Fraser, Ralph Marven, Hugh Boyd, Jimmy James, Bob Graham, and Peter Whitall. He also talks about the significance of the farm broadcasts, the role of television in farm broadcasting, and the future of farm broadcasts.
