Amherst to Lord Rollo. Copy. Pitt has instructed him by letter of January 7, to send 2,000 men properly outfitted to Guadaloupe under an officer of Amherst's selection, who would concert with Governor Dalrymple as to the best means of taking possession of the island of Dominica, and [if practicable] of St. Lucia, and to make ready for another very important operation, which it is hoped might take place at end of September, or beginning of October. He informed Pitt of the troops he purposed employing and that he would put them under command of Rollo. Amherst anticipates no great difficulty as regards Dominica. Having taken the island, he is to put it in proper posture for defence. He is expected to co-operate in every way with Capt. Legge and the navy. Details of supplies areset forth. Rollo is empowered to call Courts-Martial, and to approve sentences of death for desertion and mutiny. The troops should reach Guadeloupe early in May. He should communicate with Pitt as occasion may arise
