Wolfe to [Monckton]. In order to divert attention, Wolfe ordered that Webb's Regiment should march about 8 A.M. toward Gorham's post, and Admiral Holmes fall down to St. Michel to cannonade and put on the appearing of landing. The three other battalions should be in readiness without extraordinary show to embark in the boats if it should be necessary. He would rather Montcalm should attack a corps with superior numbers than that the British should attack the whole French army entrenched with what he could put ashore at one landing.If Montcalm will give Burton and himself but two hours, they will "knock his battalions about most furiously."
